CURRICULUM

Subsections: INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION

The English-Chinese Bilingual Program is provincially approved by Alberta Education and is offered by the Edmonton Public School Board. Students study the provincially approved curriculum like students in an English-core program, except that instructional time comprises as close to 50% in Chinese as possible.

The development of social, physical, intellectual, and language skills are primary objectives in kindergarten.

At the elementary level (Grades 1 to 6), the subjects taught in English are: English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Subjects taught in Chinese are: Chinese Language Arts, Mathematics, Art, Health, and Physical Education. Music may be taught in both languages.

Chinese Language Arts is an optional course at the Junior High (Grades 7 to 9) and Senior High (Grades 10 to 12) levels designed to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Chinese with emphasis on conversational skills. Studies include a variety of short stories, novels, plays, and poetry. Art and cultural activities are also included. Computer skills in Chinese word processing are practiced when possible. Chinese Language Arts carries the same credits as other optional courses.

Chinese Language Arts at the Senior High level meet the language requirements of the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Program of studies. Students who wish to write the I.B. Exam in Grade 12 will have that option. This course may also be taken as an option for credit towards a High School Diploma and may be accepted for entrance requirements at post-secondary institutions.

Students in the Chinese Bilingual Program have participated in the pilot study in Edmonton for the Young Learners Chinese Test.

The Young Learners Chinese Test (YCT). The YCT is a test for non-native Chinese learners under the age of 15 and consist of 3 levels:

  • Level 1 is for students who have studied Chinese for 150 hours and have mastered a vocabulary of 500 characters and assesses listening and reading skills;
  • Level 2 is for students who have studied Chinese for 250 hours and have mastered a vocabulary of 1100 characters and assesses listening, reading and writing skills;
  • Level 3 is for students who have studied Chinese for 400 hours and have mastered a vocabulary of 1700 characters and assesses listening, reading and writing skills.

Many of our junior high and senior high students have challenged the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK).

China's Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, also known as HSK or the Chinese Proficiency Test, is a standardized test designed and developed by the HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers including foreigners, overseas Chinese and students from Chinese national minorities. Supervised by the State HSK Commission under the PRC Ministry of Education, HSK is held regularly in China and other countries each year. It consists of HSK Basic, HSK Elementary-Intermediate and HSK Advanced tests.

Internationally recognized certificates are issued to those who have secured the required scores.
