Scholarships and bursaries support second language learning

Edmonton... Twenty-two bursaries and scholarships have been awarded to Alberta's present and future Kindergarten to Grade 12 language teachers to help enhance knowledge and fluency of second languages.

The Language Teacher Bursaries, valued at $5,000 each, are being given to 10 teachers to attend a language course or a language and culture immersion program outside Canada. In addition to these bursaries, Languages in Teacher Education Scholarships of $2,500 each have been awarded to 12 post-secondary students currently in a teacher preparation program that includes second language learning.

"These awards support and encourage teachers to pursue second and third language learning for instruction purposes," said Education Minister Gene Zwozdesky. "They complement the province's Second Language Learning Initiative, which encourages students to learn a second language and to become more aware of other cultures."

To be eligible for a Language Teacher Bursary, applicants must hold a valid Alberta professional teaching certificate and must have been teaching in the province for at least three years. Applicants must also have a specialization in languages, or show evidence of having begun the study of the language they will teach.

"Knowledge of a second language is becoming more and more important in today's society," said Advanced Education Minister David Hancock. "It is encouraging to see more of Alberta's future teachers take an interest in learning and teaching second languages so that more Albertans can be prepared to compete in the global marketplace."

Students eligible for a Languages in Teacher Education Scholarship must be Alberta residents registered full-time in a recognized teacher preparation institution in the province. Recipients are nominated by their post-secondary institution based on academic achievement and the education program components they have taken that will prepare them to be a language teacher after graduation.

These scholarships and bursaries are a few of the more than 50 available to Albertans through Alberta Scholarship Programs. More information about these and other scholarships is available online at www.alis.gov.ab.ca/scholarships.
