Scholarship Application Instructions
Please read the following information carefully before
obtaining the application form:
- Only one application form per student is required to
qualify for the various ECBEA awards at your grade
level.
- It is your responsibility to have the completed
application form and supporting documents delivered to
the ECBEA Awards & Scholarship Committee by the
deadline, April 30.
- Complete all the required information in the
application form and print a copy before obtaining the
required signatures.
- Forms that are incomplete or with illegible printing
will be declared invalid and will be discarded.
- Make sure that your name appears on all attachments.
- Scan your completed application and supporting
documents into a PDF format, if possible, and email to:
awards@ecbea.org
or place your completed application and supporting
documents in the ECBEA collection container at your
school.
- The names and photographs of scholarship recipients
may be published, unless the ECBEA is notified in
writing prior to April 30.
- By signing the application form, you certify that
you have read, understand and accept the terms of this
application, that the completed information is accurate,
and consent to have the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual
Education Association verify marks with Edmonton Public
Schools, if required.
- We encourage students to obtain references letters
from people other than your Mandarin teachers. Other
references other than your teachers may provide you with
a distinctive reference that will make your application
unique!
ECBEA Awards & Scholarship Criteria
- Only students enrolled in the Chinese (Mandarin)
Bilingual Program offered by Edmonton Public Schools are
eligible. Preference will be given to students who have
been enrolled since Grade 4 without a break.
- Students in beginner classes are not eligible.
- Marks are important but they are not the only
criteria in our decision-making process.
- The decisions of the ECBEA Awards & Scholarship
Committee are final. Absolutely no appeals will be
considered.
- Successful applicants will be notified by email or
through your school.
- Winners must attend the ECBEA Awards Celebration to
receive their awards. The date, time and location of the
ECBEA Awards Celebration will be communicated to you.
- Winners are expected to write notes of appreciation
to scholarship sponsors.
Available Scholarships
CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE IN EDMONTON AWARD (Grade 6)
Criteria:
- Student’s most recent report card must have passing
grades (A, B or C) in 5 subjects (Chinese Language Arts,
English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies).
- Students must have written a YCT or HSK test.
- Students must continue in the Chinese Bilingual Program
in Grade 7.
Instructions:
- In 100 words or less, answer: Why I intend to continue
studying Mandarin.
ECBEA AWARD OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE (Grade 6)
Criteria:
- Student's most recent report card must have letter
grades of (A) in all 5 subjects (Chinese Language Arts,
English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies).
- Students must continue in the Chinese Bilingual
Program in Grade 7.
Instructions:
- In 100 words or less, tell us about your
extracurricular activities.
YORKTON GROUP AWARD (Grade 6)
Criteria:
- Student's most recent report card must have letter
grades of (A) in all 5 subjects (Chinese Language Arts,
English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies).
- Students must continue in the Chinese Bilingual
Program in Grade 7.
Instructions:
- In 100 words or less, tell us about your
extracurricular activities.
ECBEA SERVICE AWARD (Grades 7 to 12)
Criteria:
- Open to Grades 7 to 12
- Students must have been enrolled in the Chinese
(Mandarin) Bilingual Program offered by Edmonton Public
Schools since Grade 4 without a break.
- Student’s most recent report card average (Mandarin,
English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) must be
70% or better.
Instructions:
- Attach reference letters, and
- Attach a letter telling us:
a) Why you volunteered to help the ECBEA,
b) Which ECBEA events you helped at,
c) When you volunteered,
d) Where you volunteered,
e) How many hours you volunteered for the ECBEA, and
f) What other community events you volunteered at.
GUOFENG CHINESE DANCE AWARD (Grade 9)
Criteria:
- Students must be in Grade 9 in the Chinese Bilingual
Program.
- Student’s most recent report card must have passing
grades (A, B or C) in 5 subjects (Chinese Language Arts,
English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social
Studies).
- Priority will be given to students in the following
order:
1. students who have learned and perform Chinese dance,
2. students who have other performance skills, and
3. students who have participated in other cultural
activities and volunteered at school or community events
Instructions:
- Attach reference letters, and
- Attach a letter telling us:
a) What Chinese dances you perform,
b) What other performances you do,
c) Where, when and how many hours you volunteered at
school or community events,
d) What your other extracurricular activities are.
OTHER ECBEA AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS (Grades 7 to 12)
Criteria:
- Student’s most recent report card mark in Mandarin
must be 85% or better, AND each mark in (English,
Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) must be 80% or
better.
- If marks are provided in letter grades, they will be
ranked first by the letter standing (for example A+,
then A, then A-)
- The written portion of the application will weigh
considerably in the selection process.
Instructions:
- Attach reference letters, and
- Attach a letter telling us about
a) What your goals and achievements are,
b) Your community involvement,
c) Your school involvement,
d) Your other accomplishments in sports, arts, music,
performances, etc.
CHINESE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (Grade
12)
Criteria:
- Students must be in Grade 12 and be attending
university.
- Student's most recent report card mark in Mandarin
must be 85% or better, AND each mark in (English,
Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) must be 80% or
better.
- If marks are provided in letter grades, they will be
ranked first by the letter standing (for example A+,
then A, then A-)
- The written portion of the application will weigh
considerably in the selection process.
Instructions:
- Attach reference letters, and
- Attach a letter telling us your plans for: the
university or post-secondary institution you will
attend, the program that you are applying for, your
long-term career goals and your plans to continue
Mandarin, if any.
